The University of Dundee announces the winner of the Gneiss Energy Prize for Renewables Transition
We are delighted to announce that Zack Mahoney has been selected as the winner of the Gneiss Energy Prize for Renewables Transition.  The prize recognises the best student thesis in the course MSc Sustainability: Renewables Transition at the Centre for Energy, Petroleum and Mineral Law and Policy (CEPMLP), University of Dundee.

Zack’s dissertation was entitled, “A Techno-Feasibility Study of a Proposed Offshore Wind Farm, Siparia, Trinidad and Tobago” and focused on the technical and economic viability of the construction of this wind farm project.  Promoting regional diversification of the energy mix with fossil fuel sources and supporting national development towards a just transition aligns with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 7 and 13).

Dr Ana Bastida, lead for the MSc in Sustainability, coordinated the supervision of the thesis, which received comments from Dr David Rodley (Physics, School of Science and Engineering) and Dr Tong Zhu (CEPMLP). An interdisciplinary panel selected Zack as the prize winner from the September 2021 and January 2022 cohorts.

Commenting on the award, CEPMLP Director Professor Peter Cameron said, “It's fantastic that we have a company with the imagination of Gneiss Energy to support the innovations that this generation of students are bringing to energy studies.”

Gneiss Energy Managing Director Jon Fitzpatrick graduated LLB(Hons), LLM(Dist) and DipLP from the University of Dundee during the 1990s. Latterly, he was the Executive Assistant to CEPMLP’s former Executive Director, Professor Thomas Waelde and is an Honorary Research Fellow.

Jon added, “The University of Dundee, and especially CEPMLP, will always be a special place to me and it gives me immense pleasure to sponsor this award.”
